A million reasons to do data-mining

What do you do with a million books? That’s the question at the heart of a new competition announced by a team of research agencies from the UK, the US and Canada. The (deep breath) Joint Information Systems Committee (UK), National Endowment for the Humanities (US), National Science Foundation (US), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Canada) have invited applicants to submit proposals for projects which involve processing a huge quantity of data. There’s a list of ‘participating agencies’ which have agreed to make their (massive) datasets available - the Library of Congress is one - though you’re not obliged to use these. Each proposal also has to involve teams from at least two out of the three participating countries (UK, the US and Canada). Submissions by 15 July, with projects to be completed by March 2001. Get digging.
